Castlehold Baptist Church is thriving church located in the heart of Newport, the county town of the Isle of Wight. We have a flourishing youth and children’s ministry and are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic individual to take the lead in developing and expanding this work.

The Isle of Wight is located just off the south coast of England and has frequent cross Solent crossings from a choice of ports of Lymington, Southampton, Portsmouth and Southsea with journey times as little as 10 mins.

The successful candidate will be passionate about reaching and engaging with young people and will be responsible for building, equipping, motivating and inspiring a large volunteer team, and taking a hands-on lead in the discipling of children and/or youth (depending upon their particular specialism).

The post is offered as a full-time position (39 hours per week). However, a part-time position may be considered for the right candidate. The post comes with a salary of £18,000-£24,000 depending upon experience.

Castlehold Baptist Church run or are associated with a number of well established groups that serve children and young people. These include Sunday morning groups, a parent and toddler group, monthly Messy Church, Girls Brigade, a youth/student cell group and mid-week youth events as well as having close links to Isle of Wight Youth for Christ and feeding into the work they run locally. 

Role Description:

The role of the Youth and Children’s Worker is to…

  • Lead on developing, communicating and implementing a clear vision and cohesive strategy

for children’s and youth ministry (0-18’s), facilitating the co-ordination, administration and

continuity of work.

  • Lead a programme of evangelism, discipleship, teaching, pastoral support and mentoring to ensure our young people are coming to faith and growing as disciples of Christ.
  • Develop the existing church-based children’s and youth ministry through partnership with other staff and volunteer leaders by recruiting, equipping, motivating, empowering and releasing gifted volunteers into ministry with our young people.
    • Be a member of the ministry team, working hands-on as part of that team giving leadership

specifically in the areas of children’s and/or youth ministry (depending upon area of

specialism).

  • Be in a position of spiritual leadership within the church, to advance the Christian faith in accordance with the principles and constitution of Castlehold Baptist Church and the Baptist Union of Great Britain.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting and supervising the student youth worker including their mentorship and development.
  • Lead and engage hands-on in the delivery of the existing 0-18s Programme. Currently this includes Sunday morning children and youth groups, Messy Church and mid-week youth groups.
  • Lead in the delivery of a programme of evangelism and spiritual development to reach/disciple 0-18s (including preparation for transition into ‘adult church’/further education)
  • Providing for the pastoral support of 0-18s and their families (where appropriate and in partnership with other staff/volunteers).
  • Build upon existing links and develop new links with schools through the delivery of school assemblies.
  • Be a member of the ministry team, working hands-on with 0-18s (subject to need and dependent upon area of specialism)
  • Working as part of the Safeguarding Team to ensure appropriate training is provided for new and existing volunteer leaders.
  • Working as part of the Safeguarding Team to respond to concerns about the welfare of children and providing ongoing support to families through such times.
  • Carry out any other duties as appropriate

Professional Development

  • Grow spiritually through reflection, prayer and study (which may include the requirement for [additional] theological study)
  • Attend conferences and courses as agreed with Designated Line Manager.

Accountability:

  • Designated Line Manager - Minister
  • Reports to the Leadership Team and attends Leadership Team meetings as required

Hours of Work:

  • 39 hours per week (days and times to be negotiated based upon need including evenings and weekends).

Probation:

  • 6 month probation period

Length of contract:

  • Permanent contract subject to a successful 6 month probation period

Holiday Allowance:

  • 4 weeks plus 8 Bank Holidays (or days off in lieu of Bank Holiday’s if worked). Annual leave year begins on 1st January each year. Maximum of 4 Sundays to be taken off per year

  • Castlehold Baptist Church operates a staff pension scheme in accordance with auto enrolment regulations
