St Nicolas is an Anglican Church based in the village of Bookham. The usual Sunday attendance across three congregations is around 200 and a large part of our regular congregation falls into the 60+ age bracket.  

Place of Work: Based at St Nicolas Church, Great Bookham, with use of the Parish Office and the option of some home-working.

Contract and hours: Three years, initially, to include a six month initial trial period. This is a full time post of 35 hours with six weeks paid leave. This role requires flexible working hours across six days, to be agreed, with Sunday involvement (both morning and afternoon), active involvement at Christmas, Easter and for occasional evenings.

Starting salary: £26,000-28,000 p.a. depending on experience, plus pension scheme.

The role

St Nicolas is an Anglican Church based in the village of Bookham.  The usual Sunday attendance across three congregations is around 200 and a large part of our regular congregation falls into the 60+ age bracket.  Although there are a large number of families living in the local area we have very few actively involved in Church life, even though we have established some very good links with families through, for instance, our occasional events and baptisms. 

We have just embarked on an exciting plan of action "to grow St Nicolas, with a particular focus on the 20s to 50s." The newly created full time post of Families and Children's Leader will be integral to this aim and the job holder a key contributor in transforming the levels of participation of families and children in the life of the Church. We are looking for a natural leader who is keen to invest in people and is passionate about sharing the Gospel; both by reaching out to new families and by nurturing existing contacts, as well as by growing the leadership and skills of our volunteers involved in this ministry.

Strategic aim of Families and Children’s Leader

To be a champion for families; to develop and maintain outreach and provision for children and families; to create opportunities for families to grow in their faith and in their connections to the wider life of the church.

Key Responsibilities

  • To engage on a relational level with families (parents, carers and children) to invite and nurture faith;
  • To create opportunities for families to connect with each other and with the wider church family;
  • To develop a clear pathway to Christian faith for families to follow as they engage;
  • To take a lead role in the strategic development relating to families and children within the context of the Church Development Plan;
    • To be a catalyst of change to move the church towards a greater focus on   Families and Children and to bring proposals to achieve this to the PCC;
    • To strengthen our links with local schools, other community groups and ecumenical contacts;
    • To inspire and grow the leadership and skills of volunteers in this ministry; play an active part in the life and worship of the church;
    • To participate within a team to reimagine and develop engaging worship for all ages.

Notes

  • There is a genuine occupational requirement that the post holder is a   Christian.
  • An Enhanced-plus DBS check is required for this post.
  • An appointment is conditional on entitlement to work in the UK.

Qualifications and experience

Essential

  • Experience of working strategically
  • Experience of working with parents and children aged 0 -11.
  • Experience of working with volunteers
  • Experience of running church and/or community children’s groups

  • Qualifications related to childcare, teaching or working with children
  • A relevant degree level (or equivalent) qualification
