The Diocese is seeking to appoint a Diocesan Youth and Young Adults Officer to lead us in the next stage of our strategic development of our mission and ministry with 11 – 25 year olds across the county of Suffolk. You will be joining us at a time of significant investment in our priority to Grow Younger as part of Growing in God our Diocesan Vision to grow in Number, Depth, Influence and Younger. You will be part of the Mission and Ministry Team that seeks to support the making of new disciples of all ages in both parish churches and fresh expressions of church. You will be working alongside other colleagues to bring to bear the latest research and best practice in youth and young adults mission with a focus on making new disciples with a generation who have minimal church experience.  


Develop the embryonic youth strategy to implement the Growing in God vision and strategy regarding Growing Younger for all traditions in parish churches and fresh expressions of church particularly through development of small missional groups.

Advise Bishop’s Staff; Bishop’s Council and Diocesan Synod reflecting national, regional and local church & secular good practice. Engage with wider network of regional and Diocesan Youth Officers.

Develop a young adults’ strategy (18-25) in line with national strategies and good practice in partnership with those involved in tertiary education (formal and informal), chaplaincy networks, secular agencies, parish churches and fresh expressions of church engaged in this ministry.

Encourage parishes, benefices and deaneries to significantly increase the number of 11-18s engaged in worship on Sundays, mid-week services and fresh expressions of church.

Support the development of mission and ministry in secondary schools (e.g. CU/assemblies/other Christian youth organisations/curriculum) and community engagement projects (partner with agencies).

Foster appropriate discipleship pathways for holistic Christian formation across a range of traditions leading to Confirmation

Enable exploration of vocations including ministries in the Church. (lay youth ministers, paid youth workers; ordination, religious orders etc.…)

Develop, train and support young leaders, volunteers and paid youth workers including entry level youth work qualification (Equip) and new licensed lay youth ministry.

Support parishes/benefices/deaneries in development of formal youth work roles via advice, support, planning, policies and procedures, induction of volunteers, job descriptions and contracts.

Develop the emerging pattern of Diocesan events that includes ‘Gather’, the annual Diocesan Youth Celebration, ‘Illuminate’ youth leader training events; ‘Deviate’ – annual residential youth weekend.

Encourage the active engagement of young people in all decision-making bodies including PCC, Benefice Councils, Deanery Synods and Diocesan Synods.





Theologically literate and familiar with theories & practices of discipleship development
Experienced in growing youth work in number and depth of discipleship especially with unchurched young people.
Knowledge of Fresh Expressions and Pioneer Ministry
Knowledge of good practice and employment procedures in establishing youth work posts
A broad understanding of the breadth of youth ministry across the traditions of the Church of England.
Experience of Christian mission and ministry in secondary schools or sixth forms or colleges.
Evidence of collaborative working with other denominations and secular agencies
Knowledge of current trends, opportunities, and challenges within Christian youth ministry
Working knowledge of current Safeguarding policies and practices within the Church of England

Strategic thinker and ability to reflect on the impact of initiatives and assess their outcomes
Experienced in mentoring or coaching young leaders and adults.
Ability to relate to wide cross section of people in age, Christian tradition and with secular agencies
Ability to develop, adapt and deliver appropriate training material for both adults and young people
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher.
Excellent written and spoken communication skills in order to write policy, procedures and present papers.
Skilled in the use of Social Media for communicating with a variety of audiences
A commitment to continuing professional development

Regular worshipper in a member church of Churches Together in England and attested role model of Christian discipleship. (This post carries an occupational requirement to be a practicing Christian as the post holder will be required to represent the Christian religion in relation to education and the mission of the church)
Attentive to sustainable Christian discipleship disciplines in prayer, study and witness etc.
Willing to travel across the Diocese to engage with parishes and other stakeholders – essential car user.


Regular worshipper in a Church of England parish
JNC youth worker qualification
Direct experience of Fresh Expressions of Church
Theological qualification
Visual Media abilities.
Mentoring or Coaching qualification
Line management experience
