Are you a Christian who wants to volunteer your experience to help transform lives? This successful social enterprise in Essex would love to have you join our team!  

Shared Space provides life-changing volunteering opportunities in a retail social enterprise. Our aim is to support the transformation of our volunteers, their opportunities, their lives and their neighbourhoods. Our core operation is self-financing through our growing network of charity shops, helping us to be a pathfinder in new models of Christian social action in partnership with local churches. We have a committed team of 80+ volunteers coming from a diverse range of backgrounds – of all faiths and none. A key distinctive of Shared Space is our Boost grants programme, which is led by our volunteers. 

We now seek some additional Trustees to join our board, as this successful enterprise prepares for further growth. You will bring your experience, preferably from a business, retail or charity setting, and a desire to join a creative and energetic team of trustees, staff and volunteers as we continue to grow. 

Everything we do flows from our Christian faith: our new trustees will be those who most closely match our values (attached).

TRUSTEE - ROLE DESCRIPTION

 

Location 

 

Shared Space currently operates 3 retail and training centres within a 5-mile radius of Southend on Sea in southeast Essex.  Trustees can be based anywhere but will need to commit to face-to-face meetings in the Southend area and regular contact through electronic media.

Time commitment: 

6 x 2-hour Board meetings per year and occasional team meetings, arranged to suit trustees’ diaries. 

Remuneration 

Trustees are not remunerated, although expenses for travel and essential out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed.

 

Everything we do flows from our Christian faith and the board has determined that there is a genuine occupational requirement that all Trustees should be practising Christians, in good standing with a Christian church and able to affirm our values (see below)

  

Principal responsibilities:

 

  1. Working with other trustees, staff and volunteers to help Shared Space deliver on our mission and values.
  2. Serving as a member of the board, to be jointly responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, its financial health, the probity of its activities and developing the organisation’s aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document and legal requirements.
  3. Taking a lead in one or more area of expertise within the board, as well as helping to shape relevant policies and procedures.
  4. Serving occasionally on employment-related panels (appointments; appraisals, etc).
